Descendants of Joseph Christof Odenwald
Generation No. 1
1.
JOSEPH CHRISTOF6 ODENWALD (JOSEF DAVID5, FRANZ ANTON4, LORENZ3, JOHANN PHILIP2,
JOHANN GEORG1) was born May 17, 1851 in Phillipsburg, Bruschal, Baden, Germany,
and died March 24, 1940 in Billings, Noble County, Oklahoma. He married KATHARINE
BUHLER April 27, 1876 in Bretten, Germany, daughter of ENGLEHART BUHLER and MARAGRETHE
ZENGERIE. She was born August 06, 1848 in Phillipsburg, Germany, and died March
30, 1933 in Billings, Noble County, Oklahoma.
Notes for JOSEPH CHRISTOF ODENWALD:
Joseph
was my great grandfather. He and his wife and son Christian immigrated from Germany
in late 1878 & early 1879. Oscar his oldest son came over later, with his mothers
sister, Miss Buhler, (Barbara?) as they could not get seating on the same ship. Joeseph
(my grandfather) was born soon after they arrived. They lived at Newton, Portland,
then Wellington, Kansas for a while, and he made the land run Sept. 16, 1893 from
Hunnewell Kansas, staked a claim on the NE 1/4 Sec. 11- 24N.- 2w.Im, 5 East &
3 North of Billings Ok. He was somewhat of a slave driver to his children and they
were all hard workers, except Oscar who did not get along with his father at all,
probably some hard feelings about being left behind in Germany. Oscar would run
away from home to get away from his father and one time they kept him chained to
the porch for a while. When he got loose that time, the story (from a neighbor Glen
Combrink) is that he took off running with his dad shooting at him, and never came
home again. Oscar did come visit with my dad, Ralph, one time when I was about 6
years old, about 1943. He had been traveling all over the U. S. and had bought a
40 acre tract about 8 miles south of Ashdown Arkansas. I remember him telling about
the Grand Canyon and other places he had visited. He could travel anywhere he wanted,
hopping boxcars, and had made friends with several railroad workers. When he died
he left the 40 acres to Joe, my grandfather, dad ( Ralph), grandpa and I went to
Arkansas to check the property, there was a lot of timber on the 40 and grandpa Joe
had offers from a neighbor that had been running sheep on it and from a lumber company
in DeQueen or Ashdown. Grandpa "jewed them up" on the price until he got
more than prime farmland was selling for in this area. Great grandfather was pretty
sharp and set his kids up where he wanted them. Mary married a Davis (son of the
founder of Davis OK.) and they farmed near Davis Okla., in the southern part of the
state. Charley, Grandpa and Chris farmed in this area ( Billings), and Hattie and
her Husband farmed for a while at Newton Kansas. They would all start the wheat
harvest at Davis, on family land, then here at Billings, and later at Newton Kansas,
much like custom harvesters do now, except it was all family land.
Great
grandmother Katharine never was happy in the new country, she had been satisfied
with life in Germany, and never got over her fear of Indians,(from Mrs Mike Roach
an older neighbor) and hated the fact that Joseph had run off her oldest son, Oscar.
Joseph was one of the first grain dealers in the Billings, Tonkawa
area. He would buy grain from other farmers, including the Roach family, in the
area at harvest time and he and sons would haul it to rail lines with teams and wagons
during the winter, and haul lumber or coal back. They hauled to Wichita, then Wharton
(Perry) and other places until the rail line come to this area and the town of Billings
was formed in November 1999. At one time he had several grainerys where they could
load or unload several wagons at a time. Charlie got his leg caught under a disk
when a team ran away with him and he had it amputated some time about 1925, Katherine
died in 1933, and the rest of the boys had their own problems with the depression
starting, and the old man had a rupture and couldn't work so the family operation
ceased at that time. Joseph was quite wealthy and had considerable cash stored away
at the beginning of the depression. Hattie's husband was working for Boeing in Wichita,
and she had time to visit Joseph, as did Charley because of his disability, therefore
the old man turned his money over to them, and they bought land at depressed prices,
and both became quite wealthy. When Joseph died in 1940 he left his entire estate
to Charley and Hattie and they did quite well with it. In all fairness to Joseph,
I don't believe he used his children to better himself as much as to help give each
of them a good start on their own, and to teach them to work together. He made sure
they each owned land when they were married. Joseph did not believe in banks and
kept his money in a locked cellar, behind a particular rock near the top front of
the cellar according to family members, possibly on steps on the way down. Several
months after his death Joe and Ralph broke off the lock, searched the cellar but
couldn't find anything. My grandfather Joe claimed there should have been several
thousand dollars there because he saw the old man take the money from the sale of
his cattle herd down there, also the income from the sale of thousands of bushels
of grain should have been there. Hattie would have been the one with the key but
claimed she didn't know about the money, or Charlie may have ended up with it because
he bought quite a bit of land soon after Joseph's death. Another possibility is
that it was hidden well enough that no one found it, possibly in concrete. Dad (Ralph)
was farming the place when the land where the buildings were was cleared and the
cellar was dozed up and spread out but we found nothing. This was about 1948 or
1949. Hattie had inherited the farm and had the homestead cleared to make more farmland.
She and her daughter Dorothy had come down from Wichita to supervise and they helped
search also, but I don't think anyone thought about breaking up the concrete. One
of Hattie's grandsons (Jeffrey Jeter) now owns the farm, and John Barnhart now farms
the land. (Written by Lester Odenwald in 1999)

February 07, 1888 in Taylor County Iowa, and died March 19, 1953 in Enid, Garfield
County, Oklahoma.
Notes for JOSEPH CHRISTOPH ODENWALD:
Joe was the 3rd
son of Joseph Christof & Katherine Odenwald, the first of our family to be born
in the U.S. He was a very hard worker like most of the Odenwalds. Joe was a good
grandfather, good to all us children, and kind, would give the shirt off his back
to anyone in need. Everyone that knew him liked him and respected him for his hard
work. I belive that he needed the guidance of his father and later his son Ralph
in his business dealings. I think he realized this and when he saw his brother "Oscar"
disowned by his family from lack of loyalty it made him more loyal to his father.
Joe worked on the railroads for a while and helped build the first railroad bridge
across the Arkansas river at Great Bend Kansas, for 50 cents per hour but they fed
him and he shared a tent with other workers. I don't know what years that was, but
it would have been when not needed by his father in the family business. lodenwald@aol.com

Winfield Kansas, daughter of JAMES BAILEY and IVA ELKINS. She was born January 24,
1913 in Stroud, Lincoln, Oklahoma, and died September 22, 1999 in Perry, Oklahoma.
Notes
for RALPH GEORGE ODENWALD:
Ralph Odenwald was the only son born to the 7 children
of the Joseph Christof Odenwald family that came to the U.S. from Germany. He was
born and raised in a 2 story house where the Eddie Manley home is now, on the N.W.1/4
of sec.18-24-N.-1Wim. His mother Jessie wanted a girl and dressed him in girls clothes
until he started school. He got new boys overalls for school, " demanded them".
I think he attended the Fairview grade school on the NE corner of the Odenwald homestead,
across the corner from where the old Freedom Church still stands (2004). He attended
Billings High school and was very active in the 4H. Club. He won a trip to Kansas
City and Chicago when he was in high school, visited large feedlots, packing plants,
and diaries on the trip and gave an impressive report to the other 4H members and
newspapers when he returned. He was one of few high school students to have his
own car, and was very popular in school. He met Marjorie Bailey that lived 1 mile
north and 1/4 west of his home, where his son Ralph 11 (Butch) now lives. (2004)
They married in 1930. He learned hard work and honesty from his father and grandfather,
but unlike them never forced his own children to his own ways. He was a strong believer
and member of the Freedom Baptist church. He never pressed his religion on anyone
and never attended church a lot in his later years but he did read the bible a lot
and could quote more scriptures than anyone else I have ever known. (Lester) When
Marjorie and he got married they first lived in a shack across the road South and
about 100 yds. East of where Chris & Jane Odenwald's home is now. (2004) They
had a tough time at first because of the depression, milked cows and raised chickens.
Food was so short at times that they had to decide whether to kill the chickens
for food or keep them for eggs. They told stories about patching holes in the floor
and walls with cardboard to keep out the cold in winter. Dad hunted a lot and they
ate a lot of rabbit through the depression and Mom fished a lot in the warmer months
and raised gardens. Mr. Lowe that owned the 1/4 section where Chris & Jane's
house is now couldn't make payments on it and Travelers insurance company let dad
and grandpa Joe take over payments on it. It was the first land dad owned and it
was really hard to make the payments but somehow they did. Mom and Dad moved to
an oil field shack on the Lusk farm NW1/4-sec32-24N-1w, 6 miles east And 1 South
of Billings in the late 1930s. Grandmother Jessie's step father was a Lusk and she
had inherited a 1/5 interest in that farm. We lived there until about 1946 and I
think I was born there.(Lester) I know Max was. I remember staying with the Homer
Main family a couple of nights when he was born. In about 1946 dad bought the Wallace
Carifell farm- the SW1/4 Sec.-32-24N-1W and we moved into an old house there and
started building a new house. We were living in the new house when Butch was born
in Feb. 1948. In 1950 Dad started having medical problems and was never really well
after that. He had a stomach ulcer perforate and nearly died from that and later
developed heart problems. We had a good wheat crop in 1948 and the price went to
$3.00. We bought a new Chevrolet car, a new 2ton chev truck (one of the first in
the area with a hoist), the Lusk farm, and a new D John Deere tractor that year.
